AMUSF diploma level 1

Tuesdays 9am-4.30pm, Sept 2019-July2020

Briefly, stage 1 of the syllabus contains the following. Items highlighted in bold are the pieces that will be marked at the end of each stage but all other exercises must be completed. Students will also receive tuition on underpinning knowledge. It is expected that the written research project will be undertaken away from the class and is outside of the 247 hours, however we do offer extensive lectures on elements of the project. 

 In addition to what is specified on the syllabus we expect students to also do extra practice pieces and often set homework.

 Most of the materials and fillings are included in course costs, those not are detailed below.

    • Non assessed work  ( Frames and fillings included in course fees).

    • Drop-in seat (modern materials)

    • Drop-in seat (traditional materials including fabric and bottoming cloth)

    • Stitched and stuffed traditionally upholstered footstool 

    • British and Continental springing techniques

    • British and Continental stitching techniques

    • Surface finishing from a raw frame

    • Sprung arm exercise for an inset facing (traditional materials and methods. Calico to be stitched under the roll. Fabric need not to be applied)

    • Box Cushion with piping and zip (sample)

    • Bolster End with piping (sample)

    • Historical and critical studies

    • NB. All practice pieces remain property of the school unless the student decides to purchase

    • Assessed work 

    • Sprung dining chair (traditional materials and methods including fabric and bottoming cloth). Frame and fillings included in course fees, covering fabric to be supplied by student. 

    • Upholstered and lined box with decorative detail and deep-buttoned lid (modern materials, with a minimum of three diamonds).Frame fillings and covering fabric to be supplied by student.

    • Portfolio containing notes and details of work in progress

    • A Written Research Project
